Hi All
I have a friend with a MK VI who is trying to synchronise his points. On searching the forum, I found a thread that bmentions

"Richard 'Two-Gun' Treacy for his brilliant method of synchronising the points with two timing lights: it works a treat!"

But I connot find an explanatrion as to how Richard did this.
Could someone point me to the explanation, or maybe Richard could kindly re-explain please?

One timing light would be placed on spark plug wire number 6 and the other on number 1.

This would save having to switch the timing light back and forth to synchronize the points, but one would still have to keep shutting the engine off and nudging the screw inside the distributor one way or the other to synchronize the points.

Using one of these machines is much more accurate and easy to use if you can find someone who has one.

There are 2 sets points. First set which service cylinders 1,2 and 3 are fixed to base plate of distributor.

These are adjusted in normal way with lobe of cam opening the points and are adjusted to 19-21 thou.

The timing for this set of points is achieved by turning engine over until rotor points to number one cylinder and then set timing to 2 degrees before TDC.

This is accomplished by loosening distributor BODY and getting points to just open using timing light/ign on. Tighten distributor body.

Set points gap for other set points to 19-21 thou on cam by loosening screw which holds fixed part of points onto floating base plate. This set points "floats" on it's own base plate within distributor. One screw on this set points locks fixed part of points to allow gap to be set.

Other screws on this set points fix this set points to base plate. There is an eccentric screw that allows this set points to move around on base plate to set timing on cylinder 6. Set rotor to cylinder 6, turn engine to 2 degrees before TDC.

Set timing using light by loosening screws on base plate and adjusting in normal way with eccentric until light goes out. The timing is then set on No1 and on No6, which is exactly the same as using the synchronising tool.

If out interest you have a dwell meter available the dwell should read 42-44 degrees.
