I find myself in precisely the same position as Mr. Kowalski and I sent a private message to this effect to the moderator. One of the things I really like (or, if the new rules as announced stick, liked) about the RROC-Australia forums is that they did not demand purity tests for parts substitutions nor have the attitude that the club judging manual, which is absolutely concerned with concours level preservation, is what should be used to determine whether a repair choice is valid. One of my main missions, and I would say contributions to the world of RR/Bentley ownership and maintenance, has been the identification of parts that are functional replacements for what is sold by Crewe Original or any of several of the respected aftermarket sources, but that can be sourced in virtually any auto parts store. A very great deal of deferred maintenance, particularly on the SY series cars, is the direct result of the expense and/or lack of easy availability of parts. Using a Bosch-type relay in place of a Lucas relay, as one example, is neither damaging to the car nor irreversible were a future custodian be so inclined. Under the current rules, as stated, this cannot be discussed or allowed. Going from one extreme to another serves no one, and that is exactly what has occurred here. I follow rules, and if the rules are to be enforced as stated then my days as an active participant on the RROC-A Forums have come to a close. I have no interest whatsoever in being restricted to Judging Manual standards for routine maintenance. If others have this concern I would suggest that they raise them, respectfully. Dear All, I have done stuff that violates the new rules too. I have removed the airbag light form my Azure because there was no other way of dealing with it. I use home made hydraulic oil. My Silver Wraith has a Silver Shadow rear windscreen. My Phantom has BMW speakers and amplifier instead of Rolls-Royce ones. My instruments are illuminted using LEDs instead of bulbs. The list goes on and on. The spirit of the forum (pardon the pun) is to keep our cars in roadworthy condition without compromising their safety. If this is the mandate - i like it. If we have to stick to Crewe originality then we will struggle to keep these cars alive. Perhaps we need to go back to how we were and simply give the moderator and administrator absolute power to shutdown any thread that they dont like. I have confidence in them to agree to that. Sometime a benign dictatorship is way better than processes and procedures. | ||

I think we need some guidance from David here. It seems to me he has 3 options: Leave the terms and conditions as they are but don't enforce them. (the worst option in my view) Enforce the rules and accept there will be a major reduction in the use of the forum. Remove or modify the new terms and conditions. My Two pen'th, I support the view that all safety related items should be as original with Genuine Crewe Parts where available or RR & B Specialist supplied alternatives. Non safety related modifications and substitutions are in my view entirely acceptable. My cars have LED interior lighting, my S1 has electronic ignition, Jaguar heater valves, alternator conversion etc. My Shadow and S1 have Facet fuel pump(as do my MGs).My SZ cars have the seat memories removed( unreliable with a mind of their own!)and daytime running lights. From a UK perspective modifications to SAFETY related items is fraught with liability. Mark | ||

I think this may be a good time for us all to thank Brian for his efforts in compiling The Resource Library. I have found this document really useful over the years and have fitted many of the carefully researched substitute parts, saving both time and money. My car still looks original. So a big thank you to Brian. But lets look on the bright side of things. We can all still come here and chat on idler chatter, just so long as we don't mention Rolls Royces. | ||

I am not one to tittle tattle to the moderator or administrator. If it can not be aired freely then it defeats the object of the forum IMO. As for not carrying out Modifying modifications this I agree with the Admin. Why, the workshop manuals are very comprehensive to a standard vehicle not a modified one. In years to come they will be understood and making repairs easy with an original car. Try using the workshop manual with a modified car. Ross, Omar, don't worry most of your additions are classed optional extras. Air bag operation though in the UK is a must, first look by the insurance after an accident is the airbag deployment. BTW I am sure some nutter posted somewhere that to use water instead of RR366 would probably work if so then this type of thing should be removed forthwith!!!!!! | ||

Patrick, I always copy and re draw any wiring modifications in my copy of the workshop manual,and any drawings for parts that I have made or had made (eg the alternator mountings and pulley on the S1). Likewise I note any alternative parts and keep all original parts removed. Mark | ||

I thought of doing a post along these lines when the new rules came out the other night. I deleted before posting it. I agree - thank you to the admins and David et al. Brian mentioned it above and is similar to my position. Originality is important - but it shouldnt be prohibitive. Substitute parts should not be the deciding factor in a persons comments and they play an imortant role in keeping these cars mobile and visible - not consigned to the few who can afford to keep them concourse. I have many upgrades - such as LED's and electronic ignition, Spirit parts on a Shadow and other modifications that a purist would faint at. But unless you are an RR efficianado, you wouldnt pick up on the modifications. Its not concourse - nor do i want one that is. It is my car, and simply because my car is a little different doesnt make it any less an RR SS1. | ||

Bennoit, I just use titanium white acrylic art paint. You have to redue it every coulpe years or so but it looks convincing enough. |
