Hi,My engine won't rev on my BentleY T1 SBH17291,I checked the carbys for lubrication by unscrewing the top checked for oil and it was ok.Put the thing back together and now the engine won't rev,my fuel is low would that cause problems I really do doubt that.Have I done something wrong when replacing the top part of the carbys

Hi Barry. When you say "won't rev", is that when on idle, won't accelerate when driving, or both.

I don't have the answer, I am just dragging info out of you for the poodles who will be able to help.

Why not hunt the internet for similar problems in other cars.

Hi Barry, so she wont rev after you checked the carbs for oil, but was OK before.
Put more petrol in, make sure nothing is in the linkage and take out the dashpot dampers to make sure the pistons move when you open the throttles.

Barry,
Colin tried very hard to extract info from you to help the team assess your problem but perhaps we need to press you a little harder for a few more clues.
Please answer yes or no to questions 1 to 5 below:

1- Does the engine speed increase in repsonse to accelerator pedal pressure as normal when the engine fires?
2- Does the engine stall when there is no pressure applied to the accelerator pedal?
3- When you say your "fuel is low" do you mean fuel available in the petrol tank that is in the back of the car?
4- Did you add any oil to the two oil pots on the carburettors prior to your "reving problem"?
5- Can we assume that you initially did not have a problem and then suddenly your "engine will not rev" with no interference whatsoever under the bonnet?

Hi,. Omar,Forget questions 1,2,4 fuel is low in the tank,you can assume that the problem was not there before checking oil in dashpots,no other intereference was carried out.All accelerator linkages are ok engine does not stall when pressure is applied to accelerator pedal,when pedal is depressed nothing happens

Take the covers off the dashpots. Remove the dashpots and watch the butterflies while somebody inside the car presses the accelerator pedal.

Are both butterflies moving?

Hi Paul and all of you others that helped me,I found the problem.The pistons were sticking in the dashpots so took them apart cleaned them with brasso gave the pots fresh oil and bingo off she she went and roared in to life.

Barry, Why were they so dirty that they stuck?

Make sure that you have a paper air filter fitted (not the original wire mesh type) and that there are no holes in the air trunking.

Which side was dirtiest? What colour / texture was the dirt?

Hi Paul,Yes I beleive that they were so dirty that they stuck,the dirt was black a sort of sooty texture both sides were the same.I had to twist the piston around to get it out of the pots on both sides.This car I bought unsight unseen I know I shoudn't have because if youv'e ever seen a car of this caliber so let go it is really sad.I got quite upset with it the other day I stuck it on Ebay to sell it.I have been mucking around with cars for years and have never been dudded but this time it's caught up with me.I am 68 and you would have thought I would have more sense well there you go I own it so with little money I have I will do my best with it.Here you are guys heres the tissues now come on over and give this poor sod a hand.

Barry step back from the precipice, tear up the last note take your most precious appendage in your hand and breath deeply. You are in good company and already being considered for martyrdom for the cause of preserving our cars.

Help is at hand, about the only thing we can't provide is money although you can always sell your body!! I offered mine to a potential buyer recently and they said 'how much a pound did you want!!!" Apart from the lascivious assets I have oft wondered whether one could sell futures on one's heart, kidneys and liver which the post mortem citizens keep telling us they need??

Barry, If I were you I'd now get that pre-purchase inspection so at least you know where you are heading.

For the carbs to be that dirty, it either – has not had the carbs cleaned in 40000 miles, has the old type wire mesh air filter (change to paper NOW), an air leak, or it's been back firing. Whatever the cause - it needs to be remedied.

Find somebody that can be trusted to tell you what you will need to spend in the next month, 6 months, a year, and two years. Both Mechanically AND cosmetically.

None of us are fortune tellers - but at least you'll be slightly forewarned.

If it's worth doing then at least you will know in advance why you haven't got any free time or free income for the next couple of years! :-)

If it's not worth doing, then stick it on eBay or whatever as somebody else's project - and then buy a GOOD one!

Next - get or do a GREAT service. Oil and air & fuel filters changed. EVERYTHING greased and re-greased. EVERY oil changed. Then start looking at the cosmetics.

I've just collected a Spirit from another garage. Poor girl had been sitting outside there for 8 months. It had been sitting at the owners for another 3 years before that. My estimate is looks something like £3000,£2000,£1500,£1500. (see 1st Paragraph) As much as I'd like the work, and I'd enjoy resurrecting the old girl, My reluctant recommendation is to spend the money on one that is already up and running and re-cycle this one. :-( My heart says fix her up, the final bill will be reparation for the years of neglect she's suffered!
