Good morning Technical People.

The magnetic clutch on the Shadow has stoppped its functioning!

My question is - do I go for a reconditioned GM magnetic clutch (told there are no new ones available) or do I go for a Japanese Compressor with all the necessary modifications to hoses etc? I understand the Japanese Compressor is more efficient, smaller and is the usual practice.

Am of the old school where if one could get the original overhauled, this was the way to go.

Your thoughts please.

Hello Graeme, As our Shadows are ageing, many are due, if not overdue,for rebuild or replacement of the original "GM" compressor, these now being available at a reasonable price. I bought one (not yet fitted) as I believed that after 30+ years my car was so deserving. I subsequently saw a "Sanden" arrangement fitted to an early Shadow in a very professional, "factory like" manner, units of that genre being (as noted by you) more compact, lighter (recall the weight of the original!) and due to modern design etc., presumably more efficient. The unit which I refer to certainly produced very cold air and in copious volumes. However, if you are a concours participant or perhaps a "Corniche" owner etc. (where originality is more of a concern) I suspect that you might want to retain the "GM" unit, but as with many of these choices, the decision will rest soley with the owner. I had the compressor changed in the Spur for under $400 - perfect and original - needless to say not from the Factory!

At the risk of inciting a riot, it is quite OK to lock the compressor clutch. The GM/DELCO/Harrison compressors are modulated by the VIR or throttle suction valve, unless the factory mod to cycle the clutch has been applied.

Thank you for all the valuable information given me re the magnetic clutch.

I am going with the suggested smaller Japanese unit, and the modified piping required.

All enquiries re repair/rectificationof the existing GM equipment came in higher than the quoted replacement and modifications.

I am going to submit photo's of the modifications to Bill Coburn so if any one else decides to look at this option there will be information available through this site or perhaps even through Topics.

Thanks you all for the information re Magnetic Clutch repairs.

Having looked at all the options, I have gone with the replacement Japanese Unit and modifications to the pipes/hoses.

Concours was not a consideration - my days being involved in that situation finished with GKM60 - the Barker bodied 20hp.

I will be forwarding photo's and details of the modifications to Bill Coburn, so if anyone else is faced with this situation, they will be able to obtain data from Bill.
