1987 Spur failing to select either forward or reverse gear. No apparent reason then ( so far ) luckily ,decides to behave normally again some time soon after.Transmission specialist checked out and suggests that it appears to be electrical fault.Auto electrician has never seen such a fault and reluctantly offered to embark on a "search and find mission" which sounded like a potentially time consuming task particularly in view of problem's intermittent nature.Any clues or "electrical contacts" in Sydney would be greatly appreciated.I am in Manly area. Thanks kindly. |

Stephen, I suspect your Spur will use the electric actuator similar to the unit used on earlier Shadows etc. These units are normally very reliable but can develop faults as the wiring ages or due to corrosion if the car is regularly used in marine/industrial environments. The neutral/reversing light microswitches can also go out of adjustment. I trust Richard Treacey will be able to advise if the actuator is similar to the Shadow unit; if so I can provide you with the troubleshooting diagnostics to check out the actuator connections.

Yes, the 3 speed SZs have an identical actuator to the 3 speed Shadows. I had a broken wire in the loom above the actuator once which caused the same symptoms as described. It was a real b***** to find, but easy to fix. If a microswitch fails, the symptoms are usually different. |

The Spirits have two micro switches for a gearchange interlock which in turn operate through a relay situated in the bank immediately in front of the dashboard on the right hand side. This circuit is designed to prevent engine starting while 'in gear'. One microswitch is located on the left hand side of the switching mechanism on the steering column. Having the selector cowl off the switch is easily accessable and easily checked. The other switch resides in the actuator on the side of the gearbox. This is a little more difficult and involves removing the unit from under the car having disconnected the supply cables in the car. Lifting the carpet will reveal all. As David says, it is an unusual fault and Richard's problem of a broken wire is clearly retribution for past sins or sabotage. The relays are common garden variety. Before opening the actuator get yourself a new gasket GB6107 since you want to be quite sure no nasties are going to get in that box! |

By the way, Stephen, check fuse A6 in section F2 (middle) for tightness, cleanliness and corrosion first as this is the gearchange fuse. |
