The editor of the weekly Motoring section in one of our major newspapers, recently replied to a intending purchaser of a 20 yo. (approx) "M. Benz", the question essentially being, "What should I look (out) for?". Although I regret having misplaced the article, the reply was to the effect that IRRESPECTIVE of the "badge" upon the grille/bonnet (hood) one must expect to effect potentially expensive repairs on a car of that AGE, recorded mileage notwithstanding. This simple reality continues to be ignored, too often resulting in a financial disaster of monumental proportions. Ultimately the marque itself suffers, which might explain some of the extraordinarily low prices now being witnessed nationally. Comprehensive specialist pre-purchase checks afford some degree of insurance against buying a car which is basically beyond recovery, due to accumulated neglect and/or abuse. |
