The right turn signals work perfectly on my Shadow 1, but the instrument bulb does not light up or blink (even though I hear the relay clicking and outside signals work). I do not have power in the right bulb socket using my test light. The left side works fine. Any ideas? Richard |

Re check all your lights ,including the side repeater , there is insuffient load on the relay to switch the pilot light on. Mike |

The flasher is thermal and provides the flashing with a bi-metal strip. If a bulb is out there is less of a load and the flasher, but it will still blink. |

I appreciate this was a query from some months back, but it’s a problem I just fixed in my 1969 Shadow with Chippendale dash, should yours be a similar age. The indicator stalk is different to later Shadows (I & 2’s), it only has indicator function and nothing else. There are 2 brass fingers/prongs nearest the steering wheel under the cowl, these make a ground connection via the metal body of the stalk when the stalk is operated to complete the instrument bulb connection. I had to replace both of these prongs due to metal fatigue and clean the stalk body to make a good connection, both my instrument warning triangles now work. It’s frankly a terrible design, looks like a complete after-thought when they were designing this component! I can add photos if it helps.

Hi Richard, I've attached a few pictures below after I removed the indicator stalk. Ringed in White is one of the prongs, when the switch operates it makes contact with this to complete the circuit. The action of slight bending this prong over the years causes it to significantly weaken at the circuit board, there was no 'spring' left in it and it wasn't making firm contact. The green circle highlights where the second prong used to be for the other direction bulb; this was so weak it fell off at the lightest touch.
I repaired this using some brass strips from the back of a double mains socket which I cut down to size and soldered to the circuit board; here is the switch with one new piece of brass soldered in and the other one yet to be repaired, you can see the crack in the original prong.
Hope this helps a bit, please shout if you need any more. |
