As is true for so very many things, there are actually very few producers for "thing X" than there are those who market "thing X" under their own house brand name.

An excellent example of this is motor oil. AutoZone, O'Reilly's, Walmart, and the list goes on and on (insert appropriate "house brands" for where you live) are not made by them, but by one of the major well-known refiners or by lesser known (to the general public) but well-known in that business arena refiners.

Name an auto part that's a basic service item, regardless of the make/model it's intended for, and that's true. There are way more aftermarket brands than there are actual aftermarket manufacturers.

Brian,

This why we need members to post details on "house brand" items when known and/or "discovered" so others can make better informed decisions when purchasing "after market" items for their vehicles.

David,

You'll get no argument from me there. We also need members posting information regarding *any* aftermarket parts they've used that have proven suitable to purpose in our cars.

These cars (or many of them, anyway) would be living much happier and longer lives if their custodians could just hop on down to the local auto parts store and confidently buy common replacement parts without their personally being "the trailblazer" for that given part.

I've spent years trying to accurately document my personal experience, and the experiences of others I know and trust, who are not obsessed with buying only from Crewe Original or one of "the regular suspects" in the UK for parts. While I am grateful to "the usual suspects" for keeping us in otherwise hard to source parts, and they could make a living just on that, I see no purpose in buying every little thing from them.

I have FS head gaskets on my Bentley8 4 years ago. These were recommended by FS and the well known specialist that fitted them over genuine Bentley parts. They fitted genuine valve stem seals and other seals as these were the only ones available at the time and an aluminium radiator and genuine thermostat. The heads were skimmed and the valve seats and valves refaced. The performance and economy improved despite the Engine being only 20 years old with 55k miles ( Bentley short engine with heads fitted by a main dealer for the previous owner) when the A bank gasket failed with no warning.
