What if the cable that pulls the latch open for the engine hood breaks before the hood unlatches- is there any way to get the hood open?
I've been looking at this failure mode for months wondering (mine is NOT broken).

I have tied a length of electrical wire to the mechanism. The wire dangles down the firewall so I can reach it from underneath. My hood cable has never failed but-like you - I wanted to be prepared just in case.

Larry. This has been on my to do list for years. Hopefully before it's too late.

To Cliffs point the only solution I have heard if it does happen is to file an open ender thin enough to fit between the grille and bonnet. Undo the three top grill bolts, remove the grille and poke a broom handle along the top of the engine and activate the mechanism.

Of bigger concern to me is the cheap plastic boot release mechanism on spirits. On late model Spirits/Spurs the spare is relocated inside the boot so there is no longer the tyre pressure access hole to gain access. The only access you have is through the number plate light. You could drill a hole behind the number plate. I am thinking of running a secondary lever from the mechanism up to behind the number plate light for when it inevitably fails.

Brilliant indeed! Thanks Brian!
This is my next project after I finish a reseal of the front hydraulic pump today.
The question came about as I noticed one strand of the flexible wire on my hood pull is broken leading me to believe that others may be in the same process
and causing a "failure to open" in the future.
Trying to replace the current cable seems to be an involved process which I will look at after the above fix goes in.

Now the "boot" issue is one I haven't considered yet but I will now.
