Is it possible to adjust the steering wheel freeplay with the box connected , in situ ? The freemovement in the steering wheel seems excessive compared to the box on my recently purchased Mercedes W123, which the Merc. Specialist has just reset. mark |

Yes . . .and it's easy for once :D Jack up front. Drivers wheel off. You can see the steering box. 3/4" (I think) lock nut with an allen key screw. Mark and Hold allen key, loosen nut. Screw down allen key. Keep turning steering from lock to lock because if you get rid of too much free play in the central position (most worn area)it will seize up at the (less worn) lock positions. Tighten lock nut. It will still feel like sailing . . . but it will seem like a boat instead of a ship :D Good Luck! |

Just to clarify: this can be done without removing the Pitman arm? I've been putting this adjustment off because I thought I'd read (in T1?) that this was part of the procedure. |

Hi Jeff Yes, tee-one does say to remove the pitman arm. However when I did mine I got a substantial improvement by using Paul's method, which is a much less onerous procedure. As Paul specified, I was careful not to over tighten the allen screw with the steering in it's central position, to prevent binding on full lock. As I recall, the only problem I had was accessing the allen bolt and locknut with my banana fingers. |

Thanks for that Geoff. I've got the car on ramps at the moment so I'll have a go. |

Just so we're all on the same page: some photos of the part. As you can see I have the older "problematic" Pitman Arm/ Pendulum Lever. I've finally (almost) saved up for the upgraded one and will be having it replaced in a couple of weeks when I get the uprated anti-roll bar package installed in Melbourne. I'll do this adjustment then.

Job done last night. Steering Is a huge improvement, with about 1 inch freeplay at the steering wheel rim.It is surprising how slowly and unnoticeably the wear creeps in over the 100k miles I have done in this car. Mark |

Hi all. 1979 corniche. Steering shudders and knocks when turning the steering wheel. Like air locks in the system. Fluid at the correct level. I've bled the system and adjusted the belts with no joy. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you |

George, The SY2 series has rack and pinion steering. The steering box was eliminated. You might want to start a dedicated topic for your issue, as the answers are pretty certain to be different than they are for earlier SY1s with a steering box. Brian |

I also think this query needs to be a dedicated topic. Does the juddering occur at all speeds or just at low, parking speed? Is it more pronounced when turning left or right? There are lots of possibilities from tires, frozen steering links to steering pump and rack. You will need to do some diagnostics but it's good you've started with bleeding the system and adjusting the belts. |

If the engine RPM is very low, say 500 RPM or less the power steering pump might struggle causing a judder. |

Hi all. Thanks for your input. The car does not have a steering box. It has a pump and steering rack. The problem is apparent when turning the steering wheel from a standstill or slow-moving. As Larry mentioned it's more obvious when the revs are low but not as low as 500 RPM. I will jack up the front and give it a good bleed and may adjust the idling to higher revs and see how that goes. Cheers everyone |
