I have a question about paint.
I want to update my car in a few places.
I would like to know what type of paint was used on a 1985 Silver Spur, vin FCX12018.
This concerns NUTMEG BROWN Paint Color 95 10 450.

I'm saying the following not to be snarky, but because it's true.

It doesn't matter what type of auto paint was used simply because if that type is no longer legally permitted you will use a modern equivalent that is matched to that color.

I know that by 1985 the lacquer period was over, but I can't remember if the transition to water-based automotive paints had begun (but I don't think do - I believe that was a 1990s thing).

At that year it might be TPA (Thermoplastic acrylic) which in some instances has proved a problem in later life. This does not have a lacquer coat and was I believe also used by Jaguar and Aston Martin in some colours. My 1987 Bentley 8 is TPA and mixing a clear over base formula to match in all lights has proved challenging for our paint suppliers.

Your painter should be able to determine this, as they have to determine this sort of thing for many makes and models. That he cannot or will not do that would be a cause of concern for me.

That being said, I would suggest that you pass him a copy of TSD4400, the Workshop Manual for the 1980-86 model year cars and direct his attention to Chapter S, specifically Section S17, that gets into the paints used on these cars.

The direct download link from the Bentley Heritage Technical Library: Workshop Manual Mulsanne/Silver Spirit - TSD4400

For me too.
The most easy way,for the painter & me,is that I find out what type of paint is on my car.
As far as I can see, unfortunately, the TSD4400 does not provide a definitive answer to my question..

Most modern paint systems include an isolator coating where separation from earlier paint is essential to prevent reactions.
This is usually followed by sealer coats, primer and undercoats depending on the system being used. Youtube has some great videos on car painting.
These days it is not really necessary to know the original paint type or colour as technology available now can match perfectly to what your car looks like now which will be different to what it was when new.
I had my Bentley Turbo R colour matched to the car in acrylic paint and was very happy with the reult.
A competant car painter will have no difficulty
in achieving a near perfect match.

The problem with thermoplastic acrylic paint(TPA) which is probably what it is, is that it doesn't respond well going through a spray bake oven with a different paint type on top. Air dry is preferable.

I ended up bare metaling both front wings and bonnet and starting from scratch. Air dry in a warm paintshop, heat drying may cause the remaining paint to craze

No insult is intended by the following to those who've offered information that's invaluable to the person who may be DIY painting for the first time.

The OP says he's using a paint shop. If the guy in the paint shop doesn't already know all this, it's time to find another shop. And based on what was offered at the outset about what this painter seems to be obsessed with, I'd not be sticking with him or her to begin with.

Brian, I do a lot of my own paintwork but the front end of my Bentley was painted by an ex Aston Martin panel and paint man who was very experienced in the problems of TPA, a good friend . Sadly a victim of Covid. advised me on panel making, welding and painting

Bentley Motors has, for years, been able to supply what I'll call a "minimal build sheet" based upon the last 5 digits of the VIN for any RR or Bentley motorcar of the VIN Era that was produced before Bentley became a subsidiary of Volkswagen and RR a subsidiary of BMW. When that split occurred, Bentley was ceded all records for cars produced up to that point by RR.

So, I did what I've done before and called their toll-free number, (800) 777-6923, chose the option for Customer Service, and asked if they could send me the data they had for VIN ending in 12018.

Here it is:
application/pdfBentley Build Sheet for SCAZN0006FCX12018
Vehicle Spec Report - SCAZN0006FCX12018.pdf (417.4 k)

I would presume Bentley Customer Service can make this information available via email from any one of their customer service locations worldwide.
