I replaced the main power steering twin drive belts, as fitted to all 20,000-series onwards SZs, using a genuine UE46097 matched pair two weeks ago. Genuine belts are inexpensive if available when you need them.

Out of interest, I checked at the local automotive spares vendor yesterday for a match.

Bingo.

The belts are 11mm deep by 10mm wide on the V, and 1135mm in circumference. They are used on some Renaults.

As an improvement, the best belts to use are a matched pair of Gates 6269 MC or its cross-reference. Those are notched belts and will never squeal. The plain original ones often do squeal on idle without a little MolySlip Silicone Paste every 6 months or so. The notches do not reduce strength, but promote life and silence.

Pathetic it is.

I'm still looking into thermostats.

Thanks Richard, I will update my list.

Also got an email from Chip Lamb with another update:

"Early Silver Shadow bypass hose - this is the one from the pipe attached to the t-stat housing bolt (water pump) to overflow tank above radiator 1966-?: Gates 19219, cut off 3/4" diameter portion and it's a perfect fit with moulded curve."

Didn't get to update my above post in time:

Gates 6269 belt is a Gates Europe # that crosses to Gates 7448 (or AC Delco 15448 & Napa 25-448). It is specified as a '72 Chevy 350 accesory/alternator belt for an El Camino. It is about $7.39 US that adds to $14.78 for the pair. Introcar gleefully charges $48.91 US (£26 excluding 17.5% VAT) for the Crewe pair. I don't know what you paid.

Yep. That's exactly what I paid. £26, plus postage and taxes. Around US$70 for the pair all up. Rolls-Royce is printed on the circumference: worth a few bucks I suppose....

If the belts are new stock should they not say 'Crewe Genuine Parts' instead of Rolls Royce.

Good point Adrian.

The belts came in a sealed plastic bag marked CREWE GENUINE PARTS and BENTLEY all over. The belts themselves have Rolls-Royce printed in white on the circumferences. Maybe I should ask for a partial refund because they seem to be old stock repackaged ?? Fat chance.

Would they also have been made a long time ago? Does simply the age affect dryness of the rubber? Would the $14 high turnover fresher Gates pair have more pliant rubber?

Not wanting to rock the boat on the staunch mantra that "You get what you pay for"...

Actually, Larry, I would go with Gates every time. Their belts and hoses are first class. They are OEM suppliers to Ferrari for not just belts, but hoses too, and their off the shelf items compare to anything produced by anyone. Ferrari's with timing belts originally had Pirelli as suppliers, but they later changed to Gates...they never actually said why, but I know of 2 alleged premature pirelli belt failures. And you know the hoses to the heater tap on Spirits that are that "spiral-wrapped" type, that is a Gates specialty, and it wouldn't surprise me if they made those for RR/B as OEM.

If you look at Larry's List, you will see that the aircon belt on a 20,000-series onward is Gates 6236 as I bought to sample at Derendinger: AVX10 x 1400La (10mm wide by 1400 circumference OD). I fitted it a few weeks ago.

Larry has kindly added it to his superb list, along with cross-references which he has researched.

Again, 6236 is a notched silent type.

Where would I get access to 'Larry's List'? Without seeing it, it sounds like the sort of thing I was trying to get the RREC to do.

Larry,
Just logged on again and read your message. Thankyou very much for the info, it's a pity the RREC aren't more pro-active like the RROC(A).

Hi Adrian,

"Horses for courses" as the old saying goes - our orientation and attitude towards our cars is a reflection of our culture and the tyranny of distance many of our contributors face due to their location well away from R-R/B specialists.

Unfortunately, the UK situation is different and is reflected in their attitude to those who are "hands-on" - I must admit at being somewhat surprised about this given the "hands-on" orientation of many other UK marque car clubs [eg MG Car Club [UK] which has an excellent set of publications including "self-help" and "what to look for" guides to the various models for members/prospective members].

Hi Adrian,

Actually, I'm in the USA, and although there are owners throughout the country that are hands-on, here in LI, NY it seems to be very rare, and in terms of my '89 Spur, it is virtually non-existant. The RROC in the USA also had a pretty good public forum, but are fervently proud to have now eliminated it. Club events in my local region, from what I hear from members, consists mainly of expensive (to me) luncheons, and expensive (to me) polo match picnics.

This RROC(A) forum has been a tremendous help to me, and putting together that constantly updated cross-reference parts list is the tiniest thing I can do in return as most of the people who would even consider looking at it converge here.
