Our cars, with rack and pinion steering, use Dexron II fluid for the power steering. Remember, they sprout leaks every few years. I have been boning up on Castrol LHM, mainly through Citroen sites, to determine why LHM is the only fluid approved by Crewe for the mineral oil hydraulic systems. They have good reason. Remembering a friend used to use Dexron in his Citroen, I looked up the disadvantages. Basically it is OK and compatible with LHM. However, as it is designed to make the transmission clutches engage, it has very poor lubricating qualities, whereas LHM is very good. LHM has also superior viscosity proprties. There is a readily available red in-between aircraft fluid which is also OK, but LHM is best. Apparently, changing fluids is safe with just a simple flushing on Citroens, and the seals do not suffer. Would it make sense to run LHM in our power steerings to prolong the rack life ? Should we ask Crewe ? Regards, Richard |
