If you buy it I need as my compensation 1.Good looking Iraqi or Syrian wife (cannot afford a Dubian) 2. Bottle of Vodka 3. Middle eastern traditional clothing with head caper 4. 100 hours of Russian Psychiatrist 5. The Jacket. Psychiatrist needed because I saw the squid ugly velour seats and now I am having acid type nightmares. Its all your fault as usual. He has to be negotiable but probably is the cheapest 600 on the planet. Don't buy the bugger over the net please. Take some sick leave, fly to LA and look at it in person. Could be fixed, first you must redo seats in leather. Have already got approval from your wife for you to buy an industrial sewing machine and install it in your sorry her lounge room. The 600's are amazing and simple cars to work one but part can be hard to find and pricing. I had one that I took apart and foolishly sold when completed. I would rather have a 600 any day over any RR/B it is very exclusive. The worldwide guru with this car is someone I know and met him many times when he lived in PA and he moved to Wisconsin to set up his new shop. His name is Karl Middlehauve. Google him and you can see his shop and 2 custom 600 couples and El Camino designed car. He is a cool guy. | ||

When I did my apprenticeship I got to work on a 600. I thought and still do that it was quite a car. I also got to ride in one. The mechanic smoked it up in the middle of Brisbane and that was a hoot. The 6.3 V8 really had grunt. But we also had a 300 SEL 6.3 which a farmer owned but the fool had driven it into a creek and water went straight up the air intakes and bent all the con rods. Later on in life I got to drive one of these and they were pretty fast and could easily shred the rear tyres. I would love to own a 600 but cannot see it ever happening unless I win the lottery. Robert I know of that fellow who restores 600 who you speak off, he is quite a specialist. One day I will buy an industrial sewing machine for leather upholstery - its something I have studied but never done. Time will tell. | ||

Larry, 500 SEL great car, owned one with most of the options. Only prob I had was the rear diff assembly became noisy with towing. Replaced the car with a 300 TE 4matic with all the bells and whistles.... Both vehicles I thought were a bit heavy on fuel but that may have been down to my right foot! | ||

Thanks for the benefit of your practical experience Patrick. MPG isn't a major concern as I would be only using it for occasional pleasure driving and compared to my Silver Shadow it should be marginally more economical on fuel. I'm still considering it but a camper van has also caught my interest which complicated decision making. No doubt I could have more pressing problems. | ||

Larry as long as you have a mechanic that can work out the electrical problems when they occur, a 500 would be a great car. Myself I wouldn't mind one of the later not Grosser 600 SEL convertibles but I have my car habit under control now.....I think.....perhaps.... | ||

Then I would get a Kim Jong Un haircut, a bottle of vodka, a Cuban cigar and get an young attractive cowgirl to drive me down to a seaside town where the European backpackers converge and I would start with running amok and end with howling at the full moon like a drug crazed banshee. | ||

I have only ever seen 2 Mercedes 600 in Ireland, one of which may have been owned by the band U2 as it was parked outside the hotel they own/owned, (on old Irish plates), the second was at a vintage car show 15/20 years ago. We still howl at a full moon here, I'm not crazy about hearing then banshee though... | ||

Dear Vlad, Many thanks for finding this car.... truth is they are every scarce indeed. I have always loved the 600 in any guise. There are some crackers out there. However they are seriously expensive for a poor man like me. This particular car is a bit pricey for the condition its in. I have seen them cheaper. One of my friends has three of these - one of which is a LWB. He showed them to me 20 years ago and at that time all three were in various states of restoration. Since then he has had a few medical issues that mean he will never be involved with classic cars again. One of his relatives will show me the cars next month. I am keen to see them again after such a long spell - I wonder what state they are in now. If one day I buy one of these cars i will put a modern Benz V8 and tranny in it and drive it as a daily driver and take it to the shops etc. If I do buy one of these rare cars - it will not be a garage queen. The upholstery is obviously best in leather - but if it came with velour - then that is how it would stay for me. All the best Omar | ||

Velour was an option especially on European delivery cars. There were a few options that can effect value. Sunroof, refrigerated armrest console etc. Replacement curtains are now over $2000. The V-8 was first used in the 600. It also has 2 alternators and 4 horns. It is bulletproof and no need for a modern V-8. Pointless. I regret selling mine. | ||

Take the 500SEL and buy a camping stove, a 12DC refrigerator, and a two man tent oh and a loaded hand gun. Omar. keep in mind if you update the drivetrain you will be dealing with sensors and an ECU. The people buying 600's want 100% original ones. A conversion no matter how well done will diminish the resale in my opinion. Personally not worth the expense and effort. The 600 was built to rival and surpass the Shadow and they did a great job doing so. | ||

Then again it would not be right for you to pollute the ritsy squeaky clean environment of Dubai with a polluting 6.3 nor to have it sitting in your man cave upsetting she who must be obeyed. Dear Larry, Congratulations on that great purchase. Do what makes you happy mate - that's the golden rule. Dear Vlad, The whole idea of the engine swap is to subsidise ownership. ie you sell the engine and gearbox to be able to afford the rest of the car and then put a modern engine from a Mercedes in it (like AMG have already done). I can then own and drive the 600 without having to marry the bank manager. Dera Mike, The LS is a great engine and yes I want that in my Land Rover Defender (soon to be a new project) but for the Mercedes - a Stuttgart engine will have to be selected. Dear Robert, Everything you say makes complete sense - yes I agree. However if I go down the conventional route I will never own one of these cars in the 17 years of life that I have remaining (using the law of averages for remaining life calculations). Selling the car after I have done it up is not really a concern for me. Also where I live - having a car you can drive (and reliably) gives it a significant advantage. I can always sell it to a hotel for them to use as a limo. Thanks Omar | ||

Thanks Hubert, I'll check into it. I saw his tents on the telly, if I recall correctly there was a storm on opening day but the tents withstood the winds. I'm probably going to end up at Listowel races in September and may do the Ring of Kerry while I'm at it. I'm reasonably familiar with the Dingle & Beara peninsulas. | ||

Dear Vlad, I was in the Ukraine only last month. Yes indeed about the eye candy mate...... yes yes yes!!! And goodness it is certainly cheap enough to live there. Beer was about 75 Cents (US) a bottle. Not that I drank any - I am not good with alcohol.... puts me to sleep within minutes. I did have a local drink which the whole of the ex-Soviet Union drinks. It is called Kvass and is just amazing. They say there is no alcohol in it but i beg to differ..... | ||
