My 1977 Shadow II is using oil but it has not had the good grace to bless me with an obvious cause.

It uses about 2cc per kilometer.

I am aware that the front cylinder of B bank is low in compression but the plug does not oil up, the exhaust loss is acceptable and there is no engine leak beyond the usual.

Suggestions or advice would be most welcome.

On my mates R type, the engine oil is used in the adjustable rear shocks. He was loosing oil from there as they where leaking. Is this the same on a shadow?

Don't worry too much about oil consumption.

2 litres per 1,000 km is a bit high, but was not unusual for a low-mileage or even a new R-R car in the 70's, but be aware that these cars do use oil.

I remember Don Appleby of York Motors used to say that oil consumption is more a psychological problem for the owners than a problem with the car itself.

When a Holden burns oil, it is usually the end for its motor, but for a R-R it is another matter.

If the consumption is stable, there is nothing to worry about.

Which oil do you use ? A quality 20W50 SH oil will probably reduce consumption, whilst synthetics and straight or low viscosity oils will encourage consumption and leaks. I use Castrol GTX2 for all our three Bentleys: not a particularly fancy oil, but extremely reliable.

For oil information see

There has been some controversy about the top-rated SJ grade oils, and even BMW (another oil burner brand of car) refused to honour warranty if SJ oils were used for a while recently, but I believe that SJ oils are now accepted as OK universally. BMW suffered lost court cases against complainants over its refusal to accept SJ grade oils.

Earlier cars, like my R-Type usually used a gallon per 1,000 miles (3 litres per 1,000km) when new, although I have reduced that to zero by using better pistons, rings and valve stem seals. Our T-Series uses a litre per 1,000 km, and has done since new and now has 330,000 km (how many tons of oil has it burned ?) with no change, but our Turbo R uses hardly any. It is mainly to do with the designers' philosophy.

By the way, I have fitted a Silver Spirit neoprene rear main bearing oil seal and housing to the T-Series to eliminate all oil leaks completely: a really good bolt-on modification indeed, and easy to do.

Rick,
Before you contemplate major surgery, can you please advise the typical driving patterns for your car e.g. short distance stop/start city driving, long-distance high speed country driving etc and the approximate % of each type. Also please advise the current mileage for your car and I should be able to give you some more specific suggestions as to the causes and possible remedies which may avoid the need for surgery.
