To me the difference between the P7 and P8 is like the Shadow I and II. Mostly the same but with subtle differences. I will buy a P7 when the prices drop or by February 2018. These are lovely cars. | ||

That's a great way to put it Omar. Don't muck around with something to much that has been working well for so long. Just a few corners knocked off for a minor face lift. I think they have done a good job. I will be very interested to learn more about under the skin improvement. Electrical, safety, drive ability. The say it is 50% more rigid, but rides better and is 10% quieter. The new capacity twin turbo engine will be good to learn more about. Surely this would have to be the quickest car based on its weight? Here are some comparisons.    | ||

Dear Patrick, selling classic cars in Dubai is very hard work. I have not sold anything for a few months now. My target is to sell 10. And no I will not be able to justify the cost of a post 2012 Phantom. Mine will therefore have to be 2005 to 2008. Fingers crossed | ||

But what is with Crewe these days as far as white leather goes? It seems that they are favoring it quite heavily. While white leather looks stunning when new, I have never, ever seen it age well. I'd personally prefer something in a very light grey used in this particular car. | ||

I really like the purple, but yes Brian I agree, white does not age well at all. The Phantom I saw (owned by a customer) at the Peninsular Hotel had white interior, and along with a full cigarette hole in the back seat, it looked quite dirty. I wouldn't go any lighter than the beige my Shadow has, but for looks the lighter colours look stunning. For the new Phantom, I really do like the 2 tone car I put at the top of this post. I do like that it is the first Rolls-Royce ever to not have the chrome trim up the centre of the bonnet, which I thought I didn't like at first, but now I just really like the clean bonnet, and the rounded shape it has in the middle pressing.  I also like the new integration of the grill into the bonnet, looks so much better than how they did the Ghost.   | ||

Omar, plenty of sponsorship on this one. Cannon run 8-10 Sept Nottingham- Newcastle, this was a coffee stop on the 9th at the Lakeland Motor Museum in the Lake district. IMO the cars shape does grow on you but it is huge with superb performance.  | ||

Mark - That's a very interesting observation. I thought manufacturers had stopped using centre of the bonnet strips in the 1980s, for safety reasons. Obviously not, given that RR have only just removed it in their latest models. | ||

My plan to buy a Phantom is taking shape. Firstly because as predicted their prices are dropping and secondly because I am getting there with my target of selling cars. I have to sell 10 cars to allow the Phantom to come home. I have now sold a 79 VW Bay bus, a 69 E type Jag and maybe my 72 Toyota Celica. Only 7 more to go before February..... | ||

Last weekend I saw the new Phantom at Belgium's premier classic car event, "The Zoute Grand Prix". It's quite elegant, but I felt the previous generation had more presence. Still, I woulnd't mind finding it in my garage.  | ||

Unfortunately IMHO, most if not all, manufacturers have not found the right design for headlight surrounds for the new LED lights. Their small size appears to have confounded the body stylists and retractable covers have always been a source of unwanted problems due to reliability. The current Tesla Model S is an example of what I regard as acceptable styling:  . | ||

I have not seen such a polarizing design come out of Rolls-Royce since the Camargue. Someone else I know who's an RR enthusiast of long standing said it best with regard to the Goodwood Phantom: "Vulgar." They have always struck me as profoundly clumsy looking in all their guises, including the coupe and DHC. I don't love the remaining current design idiom from Rolls-Royce, either, but it's better than the Phantom. I keep hoping the next generation of sheet metal is right around the corner and it will be a major departure from the current one. Brian |
