hi mark i have recently bought a shadow 1 and i also bought a oil filter part #r2069p and proceeded to change the oil,but i found the filter to be the incorrect one, its slighty shorter and has large holes at both ends where the filter i have on at the moment is metal encased in metal with paper element inside and large hole one end and small hole the other have you come across this problem, and can anyone shed some light on the correct filter and part number thank you kev |

Can't remember the Repco part number offhand but I just went into Repco and told them the make and year of my Shadow and they supplied the correct filter no problems, I think it cost just over $50 and it came with the correct rubber seals and fitted perfectly. |

Filters For Fifty bucks !! Crazy. I buy mine for A$24 (SSI) and A$18 (SSII, SZ etc). They are genuine Crewe parts in a branded Crewe box, complete with new aluminium sump plug washers and rubber seals. |

Hi Kevin/Jon, Have been trying to track down Repco part no. R2069P with complete lack of success. R-R/B part numbers have a two letter prefix followed by the numeric number and kits are usually prefixed by RH - the Shadow I oil filter kit was originally RH2543 and was replaced by RH10003 which is the correct kit for all Shadow I cars. The "spin-on" cartridge for Shadow II cars is UE40893. Like Richard, I am amazed at the Repco price and I suspect you may have purchased a hydraulic oil filter with a rating in the 10/100 micron range as these filters are more expensive than standard oil filters which have a much greater micron range. Who knows, and to be honest I can't remember exactly how much it was, or perhaps that was for my Jag V12. But from my point of view it wouldn't matter if a genuine RR filter was $25 in Canberra and $50 here as I am 1600 km,s north of Perth in WA and a trip to my Repco store saves me $5 in phone calls, $10-$30 in freight, and a whole heap of hassle. Anyway the price is neither here nor there if you get the part that does the job and fits first time, after all it's always going to be cheaper than an engine rebuild. |

Hi John, Just a thought given your location in Karratha; I would expect a hydraulic service business has been set up out at the LIA to look after the hydraulic equipment in the area and they would have access to a range of filter suppliers; they can measure the element and check it against their supplier catalogues to find a match or they probably would be quite happy to give you the catalogues to browse through yourself. Only problem is the seals that are needed to go with the element as reusing the old components is not good practice as by-pass leaks are common. I have heard of a conversion kit to convert the cartridge filter to the later "spin-on" filter but have not seen one advertised for about 10 years - I think Tony Ward from the NSW Club was involved in this so will ask him when I see him. |

A cautionary tale for all you financial zealots. When the Shadow first squeezed its way into the American market, some gentleman, no doubt with the best of intentions, discovered that an oil filter out of some model Cadillac would fit the cannister of the Shadow but one had to prise off the punched cone at the head of the filter and insert it in the GM product. Great until not one but two nice new Shadows were suddenly afflicted with seized engines. The filter cartridges had collapsed and blocked off the oil! Apocrypha suggests that the Factory came good with new engines given that the newly released cars had barely got a toehold in the market but today such an event would spell instant Nirvana for all but the wealthiest owners. I use Crosland filters which are a British product. Crosland I understand actually make them for RR. For the cannister cars use filter # 345 and for the spin on people # 343. These filters are perfectly safe and satisfactory but the cannister items do not come with the little conical cork seal that pokes up the bottom of the filter. These are available separately from RR but at a stupid price - presumably to slow down the use of Crosland filters. I therefore keep a genuine filter kit on hand complete with conical bit and pop that in when the reusable cone starts to look dubious. The Crossland filters are about half the price of the genuine. But putting your engine in the hands of an acnied youth at Repco is something up with which I would not put! And while I am at it, does the adapter for the spin on item fit comfortably on a cannister car engine senders and switches notwithstanding. |

Kevin; I am in the States but have a problem not unlike yours, over a 100 mile to nearest dealer and over 300 miles to a good dealer. I am able to order the filters from Albers (the good dealer) in lots of 5. For this he gives me a discount and I save on shipping. Side benefit is I am certian to never run out. Hi Bill, Re Tony's adaptor; from what I can remember it was an add-on to the existing filter mount and the spin-on filter sat proud of the engine to clear the oil pressure switch/sender unit and adjacent bodywork. |

Rolls branded filters for Shadow II, Spirits & Spurs including my '89 are actually made by Fram. It is the same one with no modifications that they make for the Jag V-12. I, personally use Bosch. Quality of brands of filters can be deduced by the way they're made & with what materials: Quality Analysis Main Study Crossland-Bosch Price
