G'day All,I have a tapping noise which seems to be more apparent inside the car,it happens when cold and also when the engine warms up.I have checked all over the engine using a screwdriver as a stethascope with the handle to my ear and the other end to the motor.Even when revving I cannot hear it in the engine bay even without my stethascope.So what is it could it be a loose baffle in the front engine muffler or something in the transmission,has anyone else had this problem.I have recently had a complete brake overhaul with new pipes and accumulators also brake master cylinder was overhauled as was the fluid resevoir the brake pumps were also checked. I had exactly the same problem after my hydraulics had been dismatled. In my case it was one of the pipes touching the aircon components in the vicinity of the distributor. Good luck with this, as I know exactly how annoying the sound is. | ||

As Omar says – check hydraulic pipes touching anything or even just loose in it's correct clip. Also check exhaust manifolds, gaskets and clamps with a tube or hose. Plastic fuel pipe with a piece of rubber hose for your ear is ideal. Check around spark plug holes in the same way. Give the tube a light blow *across* the end to hear what you are listening for. Does the tapping change under load or if you pump the brakes? BTW, The engine dipstick makes a great listening stick as well.  | ||

Hi Barry, Don't know if the Shadows/T/T2 are the same but my car Turbo R had an unidentified sound, only apparent in the car. Turned out to be the hot water tap for the heater core. When its supposed to be closed it chatters acting like a water hammer on the heater core. Apparently a common fault. Stefan | ||

Barry if your car is a SS11 look at Tee One Topics 47 page 693.The noise on this model is hammer knock in the brake return line on the D/Side.Joining hose needs to be stepped up to 3/8 must be able to take brake fluid.Look at next page 694 at factory fitting on a spirit.If need help ring 0418266631 PHIL | ||

Thanks to everyone for their input still looking for the noise I have tried everything that has been suggested.So my next question is when did catalytic converters introduced ,(my car is a T1 Bentley SBH 17291)the reason I ask is when I shake what I think is the front muffler( or silencer depending on where you were born) could be a catalytic converter anyway it rattles maybe its something in there that is trying to get away.The noise sounds like hydraulic lifters and could well be but one cannot hear the noise in the engine bay.Anyway onwards and upwards I will find this noise with your help. Barry I have a similar tapping or "ticking" in my Shadow SRH 19305 which is only apparent whilst driving, whilst a little frustrating at times and with the radio on I hear nothing. However, I am told by the local RR restoration guy it could be the power steering pump and bearings. Now I am only a novice in all things mechanical and have to believe, rightly or wrongly, the expert ears of my specialist. He is fixing this as well as a few other minor things for me in the next few weeks, so I will write again and let you know. By the way and slightly off topic I recently had the rear sub frame mountings done, bought the parts in the UK and what with a favourable exchange rate picked up all the pieces for around A$ 1500, all fitted for a little extra. She now drives like a dream - I am so pleased and with a few minor repairs still needed I will have, in my opinion, the perfect automobile. Kevin | ||

Hi Kevin, To answer one of your queries, no, your car will not be fitted with catalytic converters as it is too early. It could, however, be a loose baffle in one of the silencers or even bits of loose weld blowing about inside one of the silencers. Is it a regular rhythmic clicking or random? Hi Chris From an expat Nottinghamian,the noise sounds like a loose tappet or sticking hydraulic lifter but having checked all that the noise seems to be more apparent inside the car not in the engine bay.As the engine revs louder the noise seems to disappear but at low revs its continuous. Hi Barry, When you say "at low revs its continuous", does it vary with engine speed? Forgive me for asking but what is the condition of your engine oil? Is it old and thin or is it fairly new? Is the noise constant whether the engine is hot or cold? Kind regards, Chris | ||

Chris,The engine oil is fresh has only been changed 500 miles ago and the noise is constant either hot or cold.My mechanic had a listen today and he is convinced its hydraulic lifters so has recomended using an oil additive. Barry | ||

Dear Barry, The more I read your notes the more it sounds exctly like my problem when the pipes were touching the airconditioning assembly. Here is a symptom that you have not mentioned but let it be the test. Do you go to the engine compartment expecting to hear the same regular ticking sound and find that everything sounds perfectly ok when you are outside the car? then you go into the cabin and close the door, the sound is very noticeable indeed. In my case, the noise would diminish when i rolled the window down. I had this problem on two occasions on two different cars. good luck and all the best. Omar | ||

Hi Barry. It is not at all unusual for the one or other (or both) the brake pumps to tap. As long as it is charging the accumulator with adequate pressure and your warning lights are not coming on prematurely, there is no mechanical reason to do anything about it yet. It really depends on whether or not you can tolerate the tapping noise. For peace of mind, at least you have identified it and know that it is nothing serious. In my experience, once you have identified a noise on a Rolls-Royce, you will be acutely aware of it each time you drive the car and there will always be an urge to quieten it down!
