Dave Gore coined the phrase physics of music. I have applied this to some riffs or ear worms. Shaking all over. This riff is a guitar boogie. Which goes the E- E plus 1 octave- D and then B four notes. The interval between the 2 E is an octave This sounds good then one note lower the D Then B which is a perfect fifth to the low E and an descending perfect forth from The high E. D is also a minor 7th from low. E being the tonal centre of the riff. The physics of the intervals makes it catchy. The intervals all sound good. Lobster rock. This riff is C D D# C and then G G# G G# However most play E F# G E A A# A A#. C to D is 2 semitones then D# this gives tension something must resolve the tension it goes back to C. Every body happy. Then a G which is a perfect fith from C. Then add tension with G# and resolve with a G Then back to C which is a descending perfect 4th. Again the physics make it catchy. # means plus 1 semitone or sharp b means minus 1 semitone or flat note lower case b. C# and Db are the same note. |
