I'm finally putting the centre console back in the car after her floor work. When I removed it I dutifully photographed everything and left it on my hard-drive...which is now away for 3 months while the company decides whether to honour their warranty or recover the data ! I need to re-connect the seat motors at least (or get a tall person to drive the car to the nearest workshop) So a couple of double-check questions so I don't mess it up: In picture #1 Is an aluminium cylinder with a male connector coming out of it; this has a red and a black wire going into it. Is this an earth connection? If so does it connect to the earth under the ashtray or elsewhere? If not where should it be connected? (Ignore that naked black wire - it's the earth for an LED light circuit) The other three photos I'm pretty sure of but want to check anyway. Photo # 2 The purple wire is the cigar lighter with its earth (black) and light connector (red) Photo # 3 Is for the speaker connectors for the radio? There are 2 sets of speaker wires I think, If I want to keep the 'Radio Balance' function: which is best ?. If this is not possible is it safe to leave out the circuit pictured? photo # 4 There is black wire coming from here. Is it an earth, if so where do it do it? I don't really expect anyone to drop what they're doing to explain it all to me, but if anyone knows any of the answers off the top of their head I'd be dutifully appreciative. Cheers, Jeff (Message edited by david_gore on 03 September 2009) |

Jeff off the top of my head Pic 1. I think Pic 1 looks like a capacitor / suppressor? I think it piggybacks to the stereo feed? Pic 2. Correct. RED/WHITE dash board lights. Pic 3 . Are you keeping the original stereos? It's a change over relay. The existing balance is not compatible with newer stereos (usually) and they will have their own balance on. You need to separate the four car speakers (You haven't said what year your car is on this post) and use the four speaker wires from the stereo individually. NB - Ensure that the existing speaker wires use isolated -ve wires, not car body earth. Pic 4 Can't be 100% certain - but almost definitely yes. Probably came out of a ring eyelet that goes to the earth bolt (with loads of earths on) on the trans. tunnel. Good luck with the HDD & the wiring! |

Thanks Paul, And thanks again for the reminder to preface these posts with the obvious information: SRH20280; 1974 Shadow series I, RHD. Pic #3 first: I am keeping the original radio. It is a Blaupunkt Frankfurt serial number E0167928 (more on this further down). This will feed into the auxiliary RCA feeds on the new head unit replacing the replacement for the original 8-track through an adaptor cable; these are still available through arcane car-radio searches on Google - I should have bought half a dozen when I had the chance. But I do have one. The changeover relay circuit I assume was for the radio to 8-track and can therefore be safely "archived". The non-relay set of speaker wires had all the 'L' wires (earth) joined together - they went god knows where - if not the car body then ? I will be getting a professional to do this wiring; at this point I'm just finding the seat motor wires by elimination. Pic #1: All the seat-motor wires seem to find their way here so I don't think it's radio related. I may just move the seat manually and hope I can anchor the motor down one set of bolts further forward to prevent interesting motion when I brake...:-) For those who wish to keep the 8-track: I have been given an 8-track recorder. Blank tapes are available on the internet. Email me if you're enough of a concourse fanatic to seriously want to play a tape at the next meet. For original documents on the Blaupunkt (and other) '60's and '70's car radios here is a good place to start. http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/radios.php Cheers, Jeff (Message edited by jefmac2003 on 03 September 2009) |

SRH20280 SHADOW 1 1974 Just further to this - can anyone confirm that the flasher unit on the fuse board governs BOTH the indicators and the Hazard Warning Lights? Both my indicators come on but don't flash. The Hazard doesn't work at all. I have tested all the globes and fuses - including the 30amp fuse above the accelerator pedal and all are okay. Also is there a generic flasher unit I can install until I get an OEM one? Much less importantly: Pic #1 above, on further investigation, does not have the seat wires going to it as per my above post. I hope it's for the radio - I can safely ignore it for now, once I've fixed the indicators I'll work on the seats. The stumbling block here seems to be a pair of green cotton wires with +ve current attached to a female connector and apparently nowhere else to go... Jeffrey, Yes, the flasher unit is used for both the direction indicators and hazard circuits. A generic flasher unit is fine just get a replacement at the local auto supplier. |

SRH20280 1974 RHD Saloon I'm using the Theoretical Wiring Diagram from the Technical Library. The edition for my car is I assume the "All cars built to 1973 Electrical Specifications". However - can anyone confirm if there were significant changes to the Practical Wiring diagram for "RHD CARS from Serial No 9000" - between its issue and cars as late as mine : the wire colours (e.g. on the Hazard Warning Switch) don't correlate. The theoretical diagram shows what my car has in situ but the practical not. Cheers, and again thanks. Jeff |

Jeffrey, I'm afraid I gave you a wrong answer. After looking at the applicable circuit diagram (Section 15/Sheet 1), your car, unlike mine, has separate flasher units for the turn indicators and hazard circuits. |

Ah, thanks John .That explains much. Now to follow the wires and find where she's hiding. (Message edited by jefmac2003 on 24 September 2009) |

Back to this problem with SRH20280: The flasher unit for the indicators has been replaced and these are now working. Does anyone have any idea where physically on the car the other flasher unit for the hazard lights is located? Or what it looks like? It isn't on the fuse board so I imagine it's under the dash somewhere. |
