All cars with a steering box and independent front suspension have a steering idler. The steering idler mimics the steering box on the other side sort of. The steeting idler is also often a steering damper. RR cars have this feature. The steering idler has brgs to hold the shaft steady and also a paddle which moves a piston to and fro. The piston moves oil through an orifice which gives damping. Like a lever arm shock damper. The only maintenance is remove a plug and top up to the bottom of the hole with oil. If there is no oil then there are bleed nipples to get the air out. Being Rolls-Royce the steering idler is of very high quality and I have never heard of anybody having to replace it. There is a cutaway picture in the manual showing the filler plug and nipples. Every 5 years will do. |
