MOT advisory says the rubber boot may not last for another 12 months. I can source a replacement boot and wondered if anyone has done this job (more the removal of ball joint rather than the rubber) Did you encounter any problems, need any special tools etc? Location is the front left hand ball joint Thanks in advance Ron (chassis 33893) |

Hello Ron, I was advised that the boot for the ball joint had only one purpose, that was to stop dirt etc. Therefore on advice I sealed the split with a black adhesive similar to the one used for sealing windscreens. The rubber boot has been through several MOT's and has not been the subject of a failure. For all intents and purposes it looks complete. I may well bring comments to say this is incorrect but at the time it saved a lot of problems removing the ball joint etc. Best of luck which ever way you choose. Regards, Clive

Ron it is my experience that a torn boot is inevitably covering a damaged ball-joint. Removing the joint, cleaning it out, fitting any necessay bits often only the 'plastic' top and bottom cups and then re-preloading it is not rocket science. You will need a couple of pullers and a couple of large spanners. |
